Creative Nomad

photo of beth marcil in her studioWelcome to my new blog. The terrain is new and unfamiliar, but I’m excited to begin the journey.

I consider myself a creative nomad, wandering through the landscape of my imagination, wherever it may lead.

I make art with anything and everything. Since I’m always experimenting with new art media, I find that the experience I’ve gained comes in handy when I have a new idea. The upside is it allows me the freedom to let my artistic vision choose the medium for a particular project. The downside is the extreme discomfort and frustration that arises when I get stuck in the learning curve and can’t find my way out. This is especially taxing when a deadline is involved. It certainly keeps me on my creative toes though, exercises my problem-solving skills, and ultimately leads to a well-earned ‘pot of gold’. Persistence pays off.

An added benefit is the ability to share with my students what I’ve learned over the years. Many haven’t touched art materials in years, often since they were kids, so confronting an expanse of white paper with paint in hand can be terrifying. It’s amazing though, how quickly fear of failure can turn into joyful self-expression with a little gentle guidance and an “Oh, what the heck!” attitude. I love witnessing that “Aha!” moment the first time a person realizes the pure joy of diving into his or her own creative nature. Once this happens, they’re hooked. Yahoo!

I hope you too will join in my creative meanderings, where art and spirit merge, and the journey is the destination.
