Make Gorgeous Decorative Papers for Collage

Newspaper Gift Wrap

These are scenes from my most recent visual journaling workshop. In this first of three classes, participants paired up to paint on a large piece of paper using only hands (with gloves) & homemade stamps.

The intention is twofold: 1) to let the inner kid come out and paint with wild abandon 🙂 and 2) to create exciting decorative papers with multiple layers of visual texture.

Stamps can be made from recycled household materials such as bubble wrap, flip flops, and jar lids. There’s no limit to items you can use for stamping; just look around the house for anything that is fairly flat but has a textured surface. Acrylic paint can either be sponged onto stamps or applied with a small foam roller.

Working with a partner, though not necessary, is a lot of fun and adds an element of spontaneity to the process.

The papers will later be torn and used as collage elements on journal pages, so there’s no need to sweat any ‘mistakes’ you make. Examples of journal pages using these decorative papers are also shown in the video.

Enjoy! I hope some of these ideas are helpful to you.
