There is a beautiful and gracious banyan tree on the Pipiwai Trail in Kipahulu that I love to visit. I have always called her “Grandmother Banyan”, sitting beneath her for awhile whenever I hike the trail. Her massive branches reach out in all directions, inviting and embracing all who stop by. Aerial roots twist and twine themselves together as they reach toward earth, expanding her reach over time. Mynah birds love to congregate in her branches in the early morning and late afternoon, chattering with each other in loud, raucous tones. I wonder if they are recounting their day’s adventures and if this is their version of “Happy Hour”. I love the contrast of her quiet, accepting presence and their exuberant chittering.
